I have so many memories of Melvin as I type this message. I met him in 1991 when we both worked for Abbeville Shirtmakers. He taught me many lessons that have shaped my life over the years. I was the custodian for the company and he was father at work for more than two years. He gave me the tough love I needed at times that only made me stronger. We had a lot of things in common to include the AME church, the lottery and fishing. I left the plant in 1993 to join the Army National Guard and to attend Clemson University. The world is very small. I started working with GLEAMNS Head Start in 1997 where I met his sister-in-law, Ann Holiday. She would call Melvin when I visited her center and we talked on the phone several times. I always asked Mrs. Holiday about how he was doing. I was just 18 when I met Melvin. I have come a long ways since then. Whether it is that I am an Army Major, the Mayor of Abbeville or my many years with GLEAMNS Head Start, Melvin helped prepare me for success. I am sorry that I didn't get to visit the family in that I just found out today (09 April 2018). Thanks for sharing him with me when I needed him most. I will never forget him.
