Bennie was an amazing man and one of my very best friends. Over the last 15 years that I have known him, I can honestly say that I only have good memories. We laughed a lot and shared so many stories about life. I am privileged to know him and love him. He will always be a part of me and I cherish the times we had together. He was an incredible football player, but more importantly, he was a humble, giving, kind and loving man. I am praying for all of you.

I graduated with Bennie, Seneca High School Class of 1972. Bennie loved and helped everybody. When we played powderpuff football our senior year, Bennie coached and encouraged me to do my best, even though I had no athletic skills and was uncoordinated. Bennie also worked with the Special Olympics and worked tirelessly during his career in education. A selfless, sweet, and loving person if there ever was one. Prayers and comforting thoughts to Mr. Cunningham and family. Myra Davis (Ellenburg)

To the Family, My heart is grieved by the death of Bennie Cunningham, Jr. We first met at Blue Ridge High School shortly after his family moved to Seneca. Bennie was kinda chubby, at that time, and I picked at him when he was put into the same grade-level class I was in. Soon, he was moved to a grade behind me. Since we lived in the same neighborhood, we became good friends. What I cherished most was watching him play football for the Pittsburg Steelers. He always made me feel so proud to be from Seneca and Clemson University. His first year playing, he took the time to call me and wish me a happy birthday. I was shocked. But that was the kind of person Bennie was. I enjoyed our chance encounters over the years, after he returned home. He was a good friend. Please know that you all are in my prayers and I send my love and sincere condolences. ~Pastor Carleathea Benson (Seneca native), Serving in Lake City SC~

A great man who set wonderful examples for others. A man who proved if you focus in life you can achieve. Benny was a good person that many people looked up to and he didn't take that for granted. So proud of one of our own. Sad to see him go, but we must trust that God is in control of all our lives. It was time for Benny to move on and live in peace with Jesus.

Mini Cunningham was a great classmate of mine at Seneca high school. We graduated together in 1972. He became an star player on the Clemson Tiger football team, where he played as a tight end. He went on to be 89 on the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. He was on a special team. He is now on an even more special team in the heavenly realms. Benny, Susan Kilby, and I took the school bus driving test on the same day. Susan Kilby passed and Benny and I had to take it over the next day, but we passed. We drove a school bus during our senior year at Seneca high school Benny was a people person and now he is among some of the best people in the universe. Warm regards to the Cunningham family. Dr. Jacqueline (Cleveland) Jackson ()

My sincere condolences are extended to you, Cousin Bennie, Sr. and family. It seems just like yesterday when Cousin Bennie, Jr. was drafted to my hometown football team, The Pittsburgh Steelers. He came out to the house and had dinner with me and your cousin James Cleveland and wife Hattie. What a memorable occasion! The next time I saw Cousin Bennie and you was at the Cunningham-Hill Family Reunion in Charleston. Bennie gave me the biggest hug and made me feel so special! He had that way about him which he inherited from you! I pray for comfort and strength for you and the family. I wanted to be there with you and the rest of the family but I had to work this weekend. Steven Durant ()

To Bennie's family, he was a remarkable and humbled man. He fought hard and never complained. He is a championed. It was a honor to have met Bennie. I will never forget watching the Super Bowl with him this year with my wife. He was a celebrity on our hospital floor as many doctors, nurses and staff came in. Listening him talk about his NFL was cool. But he was so passionate about education that was even more moving. Above all he loved his family. I'm grateful that we met Bennie and he will forever be in our hearts. Praying for his family. Your friends, Steve and Moriah
